An unusual
task in Qatar
March 2007
Pacific
Assegai, operating in Qatar, was recently
involved in an unusual and high profile activity.
Due to the extremely cold weather experienced
this winter, one of the giant gas trains ashore
froze up with ice. This had huge financial implications
for the company that runs them. The mitigating
measure requested by RasGas, the customer, was
to inject a large quantity (10,000 tonnes) of
‘anti freeze’ into the gas line at
the well heads. Pacific Assegai, with
its Dynamic Positioning and large tank capacity
features, was well suited to conduct the task
of positioning at each well head and pumping continuous,
small quantities of Glycol (the active ingredient
in anti freeze) into the gas line. This had to
be done in all weathers and at all times throughout
the four months of winter.
For its contribution, the vessel
was awarded a highly prized “Shukran”
plaque (Arabic for thank you) by the Charterers,
RasGas."
