Project Soroosh Early Production System, offshore Iran, Arabian Gulf
(2000 – end of 2004).
Scope

Supply and operation of an MOPU at the Soroosh & Nowrouz fields, offshore Iran, for the early production of a seven-well cluster ahead of the major development. The MOPU, ESP 1, was deployed in late 2001 and commenced production on 1st January 2002. Operations were completed in December 2004.

The Early Production System was owned and managed by Expro Swire Production Limited and supplied on a contract rental basis.

  The system consisted of:

ESP 1 Independent leg MOPU.
Eight-well riser / wellhead deck support system and bridge.
100,000 bbls / day-throughput capacity production systems.
8MW power generation system for electrical submersible pumps and water injection.

The jack-up MOPU ESP 1, a 1977 built Le Tourneau 82 Class jack-up drilling unit converted to a production unit in 1997. A substantial upgrade programme, including installation of a new power generation module, additional leg strengthening and change in class, involved major modifications to the rig and production process system.

The initial 20 months contract was for contract was for turnkey supply and operation of the MOPU to be located alongside a new production jacket in the Soroosh field and producing via an 18-inch five-kilometre pipe to an FSU. During contract extensions additional modifications were requested included the addition of a 50,000 bbls/day water injection facility as well as process upgrades.

  Performance:

ESP 1’s original 20-month contract with Shell was extended five times, taking it up to the end of 2004.
The conversion of the MOPU took less than 32 weeks to complete.
From commencement of Early Production at Soroosh on 14th November 2001, total crude production exceeded 53 million barrels of oil.
ESP 1 averaged 54,920 bpd, and maintained production uptime for the whole contract of 99.89%.
On 16th January 2004 ESP 1 achieved two years Lost Time Incident-free.

Expro Swire Production provided a fast track, marine-based, turnkey production facility that enabled Shell to achieve accelerated production in advance of full field development. ESP 1 was able to produce oil while concurrent drilling, well proving and construction activities were being undertaken at the location.
